Meet the standards behind our exceptional tutoring team, or apply to become a tutor.
Every NSEMM tutor meets rigorous academic standards and goes through our comprehensive hiring process to ensure the highest quality educational support.

Our Academic Standards
We maintain high academic standards to ensure our tutors can provide the best possible support. Here’s what we’re looking for:
GCSE Standards
We require a minimum of 52 points across 8 core subjects (using 9=9, 8=8, 7=7, 6=6 etc.), with grade 6 minimum in English.
The subject you wish to tutor must be grade 6 or above at GCSE level, with preference for grade 7+.
Maths requirement: Grade 6 minimum. Grade 5 acceptable only if your degree meets our requirements AND includes a passed mathematics or statistics module.
Excluding: Citizenship, Critical Thinking, General Studies, Media Production, Health and Social Care, Tourism, and Religious Studies (unless tutoring RE).
A-Level Requirements
We’re seeking candidates with strong academic credentials: preferably a B or higher at A-Level in the subject you wish to tutor.
UCAS Points Alternative: 112+ UCAS points from 3 A-Levels, with at least grade C in the subject you wish to tutor.
No A-Level in Subject: If you lack an A-Level in your desired tutoring subject, you must demonstrate sustained evidence of further study showing A-Level standard knowledge (e.g., university modules, equivalent qualifications).
International Baccalaureate
If you’ve studied IB, we require an overall diploma score of 35+ with grade 6 in Higher Level for the subject you wish to tutor.
A score between 30-34 requires individual subject review, and below 30 will not meet our qualification standards.
Note: We do not accept IB Career-related Programme, IB Skills courses, or Theory of Knowledge as subject equivalents. Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) components are not considered for subject-specific requirements.
Alternative Qualifications
We recognise alternative qualifications like BTECs, Cambridge Nationals, Scottish Highers, Functional Skills, and IGCSEs.
We do NOT accept: T-Levels, music grades, LAMBDA qualifications, Applied A-Levels (unless specifically relevant), Key Skills qualifications, or foundation-level qualifications as equivalent to A-Level standard.
If you have alternative qualifications, they must be recognised as equivalent by our Education Officer according to QCA standards and demonstrate the same academic rigour as traditional A-Levels.
Degree Requirements
Current Students: If you haven’t achieved our A-Level requirements, we require an average of 60% in a relevant degree with evidence of subject knowledge.
Degree Calculation: We use whichever weighting gives the higher result:
- Option 1: Year 1 (20%) + Year 2 (30%) + Year 3 (50%)
- Option 2: Year 1 (0%) + Year 2 (33.3%) + Year 3 (66.6%)
Honours Bonus: Additional 5 points added for accredited degrees with honours.
Grade Verification: We only count ratified grades from provisional transcripts. First-year applicants without ratified grades may use current module marks as a trajectory, provided ALL other requirements are met.
Graduates & Essential Requirements
Graduates: Those not currently studying require a 2:1 degree with proof of A-level knowledge or further studies in the past 4 years.
Automatic Clearance: Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or research postgraduate degree in the relevant subject provides automatic clearance to tutor that subject.
All tutors must complete:
- Numeracy Challenge: Must achieve ‘Essentials of Numeracy‘ standard on the full challenge check-up
- Enhanced DBS: Enhanced Disclosure from Disclosure and Barring Service required for all tutors
- Previous tutoring or teaching experience (desirable)
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong interpersonal abilities
- Passion for education
